Noupoort CSP Project North West of Noupoort, Northern Cape Province CRESCO Energy (Pty)


Project Name:  Noupoort Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Project

Applicant:  CRESCO Energy (Pty) Ltd

Project Location: Remaining Extent of the Farm 207, Portion 1 and Portion 4 of the Farm Carolus Poort 167, approximately 4 km north west of Noupoort in the Umsobomvu Local Municipality (Pixley ka Seme District Municipality) in the Northern Cape Province. 

Proposed Activity:  The construction of a concentrated solar power (CSP) parabolic trough facility with a contracted capacity of up to 150 MW.  The development area for the project is approximately 430 ha in extent and will include the following infrastructure:

  • Parabolic trough plant, including an Energy Centre and Power Block.
  • Associated infrastructure: access roads, water supply pipeline, water storage tanks/reservoir, water treatment facility, lined evaporation ponds, plant assembly area, temporary laydown area, workshop and office buildings.  
  • On site substation and 132 kV overhead power line (to connect to the Eskom’s electricity grid).
  • Application for Environmental Authorisation: A Scoping and EIA process has been undertaken in terms of Sections 24 of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R982 - R985.  The DEA accepted the Scoping Report and Plans of Study for the project in September 2016.  The application has been assigned the following reference number:  14/12/163/3/2/944.

The EIA Report is available for review and comment from 05 December 2016 – 26 January 2017:
