Orkney Solar Farm North West Province DEA Ref No: 14/12/16/3/3/2/954 Genesis Orkney Solar (Pty)


Project Name:  Orkney Solar Farm

Applicant:  Genesis Orkney Solar (Pty) Ltd 

Location: Remaining Extent of Portion 7 and the Remaining Extent of Portion 21 of the Farm Wolvehuis 114, situated ~11.8km south west from the town of Orkney within the City of Matlosana Local Municipality and the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, North West Province.  

Proposed Activity:  The construction of a solar PV (photovoltaic) facility, with a contracted capacity of up to 100MW, within a development footprint of ~350 hectares.  The generated electricity will be fed into the national grid.

Environmental Impact Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R982 - R985, a Scoping and EIA are required to be undertaken for the proposed project.  Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessment and public participation process.  An application form has been submitted to the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) under the reference number 14/12/16/3/3/2/954.

EIA Report Available for Review:  The EIA Report is available for review and comment.  The report is available at the Orkney Public Library (Partmore Street) from 24 January 2017 – 23 February 2017.  The report is also available for download on  The due date for written comment is 23 February 2017. 

Public Meeting:  All interested and affected parties are invited to attend a public meeting to be held on Wednesday 08 February 2017 from 17:00 – 18:00 at the Orkney Public Library, Partmore Street, Orkney.
