AVAILABILITY OF BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT FOR REVIEW
Project Name: Proposed REDISA Waste Tyre Pre-Processing Depot in Upington, Northern Cape Province.
Applicant: Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa NPC (REDISA)
Proposed Activity: It is REDISA’s intention to apply for a Waste Management Licence (WML), in terms of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (Act No. 59 of 2008) (NEM:WA), from the Northern Cape Department of Environment and Nature Conservation (DENC) as the Competent Authority, for the authorisation of the proposed waste tyre pre-processing (i.e. storage, baling and shredding) depot in Upington. Storage has commenced on site upon REDISA receiving a letter of confirmation of registration from the DENC to undertake storage at the depot. The site is being leased by REDISA and as such has been handed over as “minimum fit-for-purpose” (ready-to-use-for-storage). The site is approximately 4170m2 consisting of the following infrastructure:
» A warehouse/shed with a footprint of approximately 216m2 to house the pre-processing machinery (baler, shredder and downsizing equipment);
» An office area and security shed with a footprint of 12m2, containing necessary ablution facilities for staff; and
» Waste tyre storage area with a footprint of approximately 1068m2
Location: The proposed depot will be operated within Erf 3272, 41 Soutpan Street Upington, located approximately 300m off the R360 (Swartmodder Road) (refer to Figure 1). The site falls within the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality of the ZF Mcgauw District Municipality and is within the town of Upington. The site was previously used for Siviel Kontraktuers.
