THE SOLARIS FIELDS AND SUN GARDEN SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC FACILITIES, EASTERN CAPE PROVINCE

Project Names:  Solaris Fields Solar Photovoltaic and Sun Gardens Solar Photovoltaic, Eastern Cape Province

Applicant: Solaris Fields (Pty) Ltd and Sun Gardens (Pty) Ltd

Proposed Activities: The development of two (2) separate Solar Photovoltaic (PV) facilities and associated infrastructure are being proposed for power generation purposes. The connection points into the national grid will be the existing Poseidon-Grassridge No.2 400kV power line and the existing Poseidon–Dedisa No.1 400kV power line. Associated infrastructure for each of the solar PV includes an on-site switching station, collector substation, a 132kV power line (twin turn dual circuit), access roads (gravel in nature), concrete foundations and hardstands, laydown area, cabling to be laid underground where practical, temporary concrete batching plant, temporary staff accommodation, and operation and maintenance buildings. Location: Located between Somerset East and Makhanda, ~36km south of Cookhouse, within the Blue Crane Route Local Municipality, Sarah Baartman District Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province, and within the Cookhouse Renewable Energy Development Zone (REDZ). Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, Environmental Authorisation is required for the projects. As the project sites are located within a REDZ and the Eastern Strategic Transmission Corridor, Basic Assessment (BA) processes are required to be undertaken in accordance with GN R.113 and GN R.114 (February 2018). Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessments and a combined public participation process.

Basic Assessment Reports available for review: The Basic Assessment (BA) Reports for Solaris Fields Solar PV and Sun Gardens Solar PV are available for review and comment from Friday,12 November 2021 until Monday, 13 December 2021., and the due date for written comments on these reports is Monday, 13 December 2021.
