Notice of Basic Assessment and Public Participation Process for the Geelstert 1 and Geelstert 2 Solar PV Facilities, and Geelstert Grid Connection near Aggeneys, Northern Cape Province
Proposed Activity: The development of two (2) separate solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities, each with a contracted capacity of up to 125MW. The facilities will be connected to the Aggeneis MTS via a collector substation and an overhead power line with a capacity of up to 220kV.
Location: ~11km south-east of Aggeneys within the Khâi-Ma Local Municipality and the Namakwa District Municipality. The projects fall within the Springbok Renewable Energy Development Zone (or REDZ 8) as well as the Northern Strategic Transmission Corridor.

The following infrastructure will be developed for the PV facilities and grid connection:
- Solar PV Panels;
- Centralised inverter stations or string inverters;
- Cabling between the panels, to be laid underground where practical;
- Main access roads and internal access roads within the PV panel array areas;
- Temporary laydown areas;
- Operation and Maintenance buildings.
- On-site facility substation;
- A collector substation and an overhead power line to connect the facilities to the Aggeneis Main Transmission Substation (MTS).
Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, and GN R114 (February 2018), a Basic Assessment is required for each Solar PV Facility as well as the Grid Connection. Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessment and public participation process for the projects. A separate application for each project has been lodged with the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) as the competent authority.
