Harmony Central PV

14MW HARMONY CENTRAL PLANT SOLAR PV FACILITY, VIRGINIA,
FREE STATE PROVINCE

Applicant: Harmony Gold Mining Company (Pty) Ltd

Activity: Development of the Harmony Central Plant Solar PV Facility solar PV facility, grid connection and other associated infrastructure, with a contracted capacity of up to 14MW.  The on-site infrastructure includes:

  • PV modules and mounting structures
  • Inverters and transformers a SCADA room, and maintenance room
  • Cabling between the project components, to be laid underground where practical
  • Access roads, internal roads and fencing around the development area.
  • Temporary and permanent laydown areas and O&M buildings.
  • Grid connection solution including an on-site facility substation and switching station, to be connected to the Harmony North Substation via an overhead power line (located ~2km South of the site).

Project Location: East of the Harmony Gold Central Plant operations, approximately ~6km north east of the town of Virginia, and ~11km south east of the town of Welkom within the Matjhabeng Local Municipality and within the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, Free State Province.  The PV facility is located on Portion 12 of the farm Saaiplaas 771 and Portion 1 of the Farm Rustgevonden 564.

Basic Assessment Process:  In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with the EIA Regulations, GNR 982 to 985, as amended, a Basic Assessment is required to be undertaken for the PV Facility and associated infrastructure.  Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessment and public participation process for the project.  An application will be lodged with the Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental (DESTEA), as the competent authority.

Baric Assessment Report available for review & comment:  The Basic Assessment Report is available for download, review & comment from the Savannah Environmental website.  The 30-day review & comment period for the Basic Assessment Report is from 02 September 2022 to 03 October 2022.  The final day for written comment to be submitted is 03 October 2022.
