NOTICE OF BASIC ASSESSMENT AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS

HIGHVELD SOLAR PV FACILITY, STILFONTEIN, NORTH WEST PROVINCE

Applicant: WKN Windcurrent SA (Pty) Ltd

Activity: The development of a solar photovoltaic (PV) facility with a generating capacity of up to 240MW and associated infrastructure, including:

• Solar PV arrays, modules and mounting structures
• Inverters and transformers
• A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
• On-site facility substation
• Cabling between the project components
• Site and internal access roads up to 6m in width, where required
• Temporary and permanent laydown areas and O&M buildings and fencing around the development area.

The Highveld PV Grid Connection is assessed in a separate Basic Assessment Report.

Project Location: ~15km north east of the town of Stilfontein within the JB Marks Local Municipality, and within the greater Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, North West Province.  The project falls within the Klerksdorp REDZ on Portions 10, 11, and 56 of Farm Rietfontein 388 as well as the Remainder of Farm Rietfontein 3.

Basic Assessment Process:  In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, a Basic Assessment is to be undertaken for the Solar PV Facility.  Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessment and public participation process for the project.  The application is to be lodged with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), as the competent authority.

Basic Assessment Report available for review & comment:  The Basic Assessment Report is available for download by selecting the VIEW DOWNLOAD PAGE below.  The 30-day review & comment period for the Basic Assessment Report is from 11 November 2022 to 12 December 2022.  The final day for written comments to be submitted is 12 December 2022.
