PIENAARSPOORT WIND ENERGY FACILITY 2, WESTERN CAPE PROVINCE
Applicant: Pienaarspoort Wind Energy Facility 2 (Pty) Ltd
Proposed Activity: The development of the Pienaarspoort Wind Energy Facility 2 with a contracted capacity of up to 360MW. The facility will include up to 58 wind turbines, on-site facility substation, collector substation, 33kV reticulation power line, concrete turbine foundations and turbine hardstands, main and internal access roads, temporary concrete batching plant, laydown areas, cabling between turbines, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Operation and Maintenance buildings including a gate house.
Location: The development is proposed on Portion 1 of the Farm Melkbosch Kraal 250 and Remaining Extent of the Farm Drinkwaterskloof 251. The development area is spatially separated by two intermediate properties which divide the project development area into two portions, namely a western portion and an eastern portion. An internal reticulation power line will connect the separated portions, traversing the intermediate properties (the Remaining extent of the Farm Melkbosch Kraal 250 and Portion 1 of the Farm Drinkwaterskloof 250). The development area is approximately 30km north-east of Touws River and 34km north-west of Matjiesfontein in the Witzenberg Local and the Cape Winelands District Municipalities, Western Cape Province. The site falls within the Komsberg Renewable Energy Development Zone (REDZ).
Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, Environmental Authorisation is required for the projects. As the project site is located within a REDZ, a Basic Assessment (BA) process is required to be undertaken in accordance with GNR114 (February 2018). Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessments and a combined public participation process.
Basic Assessment (BA) Report Available for Review: A BA Report is available for review and comment from Monday, 18 October 2021 until Thursday, 18 November 2021. The due date for written comment is Thursday, 18 November 2021.
Public Participation Process: Savannah Environmental (Pty) Ltd has been appointed as the independent environmental consultant responsible for undertaking the BA and Public Participation processes in support of this application for EA.
