PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSALLOYS SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) SOLAR ENERGY FACILITY AND ASSOCIATED INFRASTRUCTURE, WITHIN THE EMALAHLENI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, MPUMALANGA PROVINCE
Applicant: Transalloys (Pty) Ltd
Proposed Activity: The development Transalloys Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Energy Facility with a capacity of up 55MW and associated infrastructure to partially meet Transalloys’ current electricity demands and future expansion requirements. The Solar PV Energy Facility will include the following:
- Solar PV array comprising PV modules and mounting structures (monofacial or bifacial and a single axis tracking system)
- Inverters and transformers
- Cabling between the project components
- On-site facility substation and an underground power line to connect the solar PV facility to the existing Transalloys Substation
- Security office, operations and control, and maintenance and storage laydown areas
- Access roads and internal distribution roads
Project Location: Adjacent to the existing Transalloys smelter complex on Clewer Road 1034, Emalahleni in the Emalahleni Local Municipality. On Portions 34 and 35 of the Farm Elandsfontein 309JS and Portions 20 and 24 of the Farm Schoongezicht 308JS. The site is located within the Emalahleni Renewable Energy Development Zone (REDZ 9).
Application for Environmental Authorisation: In terms of Section 24(3) of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998), as read with GNR 144 of February 2021, a Basic Assessment (BA) process is required in support of the application for Environmental Authorisation for the proposed Transalloys Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Energy Facility.
Basic Assessment Report available for review & comment: The 30-day review & comment period for the Basic Assessment Report is from 10 February 2023 to 13 March 2023. The final day for written comments to be submitted is 13 March 2023
