NOTICE OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION AMENDMENT AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS
132kV POWER LINE ASSOCIATED WITH THE KORANA SOLAR ENERGY FACILITY NEAR POFADDER, NORTHERN CAPE PROVINCE (DFFE REF.: 14/12/16/3/3/1/1347)
Applicant: South Africa Mainstream Renewable Power Developments (Pty) Ltd
Proposed Amendment: South Africa Mainstream Renewable Power Developments (Pty) Ltd received an Environmental Authorisation (EA) on 18 May 2015 (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/1/1347) for the construction of a 132kV power line associated with the Korana Solar Energy Facility. When submitting the Basic Assessment Report in support of the application for EA for the 132kV power line, two grid alternatives were identified and assessed, namely, Alternative 1A, which is the technically preferred option, and Alternative 1B. The original EA dated 18 May 2015 (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/1/1347) however states Alternative 1B as the approved option. South Africa Mainstream Renewable Power Developments (Pty) Ltd is now requesting the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) to amend the EA dated 18 May 2015 (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/1/1347) such that Alternative 1A is authorised, as opposed to the currently approved Alternative 1B.
Project Location: The project site is located approximately 30km south-west of Pofadder in the Khai-Ma Local Municipality and the Namakwa District Municipality in the Northern Cape Province, on the following affected properties:

Amendment Process: In terms of Condition 5 of the EA dated 18 May 2015 (DFFE Ref.: 14/12/16/3/3/1/1347) and Regulation 31 of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014, as amended, it is possible for an applicant to apply, in writing, to the competent authority for a change or deviation from the project description to be approved. Savannah Environmental has been appointed to undertake an amendment application process in this regard.
