Kiara PV Cluster Electrical Grid Infrastructure

NOTICE OF BASIC ASSESSMENT (BA) AND PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESSES

ELECTRICAL GRID CONNECTION INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE KIARA PV CLUSTER, NORTH WEST PROVINCE

 Applicant:  Voltalia South Africa (Pty) Ltd.

Proposed Activity:  Electrical Grid Connection Infrastructure for The Kiara PV Cluster includes the following:

  • Onsite 132kV Eskom switching station (3ha in extent) adjacent to the onsite facility substation at each PV facility – 3ha in extent, with metering, relay & control buildings, laydown area, ablutions with conservancy tanks and water storage tanks (within an approximate 10ha footprint), and access roads.
  • 132kV power line between the onsite substation at each PV facility and the collector substation.
  • 275kV single or double circuit Overhead Power Line (OHPL) – 40m height from the collector substation to the Watershed Main Transmission Substation (MTS) (within 300m wide corridor and a 55m wide servitude)
  • A 275kV collector substation (8ha)
  • Access roads to the collector substation site (up to 8 m wide) and service tracks (up to 6 m wide) along the power line route where no existing roads are available.

Location:  The Electrical Grid Infrastructure is proposed on a site located approximately 16km north-east of the town of Lichtenburg, within the Ditsobotla Local Municipality and the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in the North West Province.  The alternative corridors being investigated are proposed on the following properties:

  • Portion 2 of Farm Hollaagte No. 8
  • Portion 4 of Farm Hollaagte No. 8
  • Portion 4 of Farm Vlakvly No. 22
  • Portion 3 of Farm Vlakvly No. 22
  • Portion 2 of Farm Witklip No. 6
  • Portion 1 of Farm Witklip No. 6
  • Portion 10 of Farm Lichtenburg Town and Townlands No. 27
  • Remainder of Portion 1 of Farm Lichtenburg Town and Townlands, No. 27

Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, Environmental Authorisation (EA) is required for the above-mentioned project.  A Basic Assessment (BA) process is required in support of the application for EA. Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required BA and public participation processes.

Basic Assessment Report available for review: A BA Report has been prepared and is available for review and comment from Thursday, 8 February 2024 to Monday, 11 March 2023.
