Establishment of Grid Connection Infrastructure for Frontier Power Gas-to-Power Plant, Saldanha, Western Cape Province
Applicant: Frontier Power SA (RF) (Pty) Ltd
Proposed Activity: The development of grid connection infrastructure required to enable the Frontier Power gas-to-power plant to evacuate generated electricity to the national electricity grid. The grid connection infrastructure will consist of a double circuit 132kV overhead power line, a switching station located at the gas-to-power site, a new IPP substation located south of the existing Eskom Blouwater substation, and various Loop-in Loop-out connections to tie the proposed grid connection infrastructure into the existing Eskom network in the area. Access roads and service tracks will also be established along the proposed power line route. The preferred route for the power line is approximately 7.10km long and includes an assessment corridor of 300m wide.
Location: The proposed grid connection infrastructure will be located approximately 7km north east of Saldanha within the Saldanha Bay Local Municipality which falls within jurisdiction of the West Coast District Municipality, Western Cape Province. The proposed grid connection infrastructure will transverse the properties tabled below.

Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, a Basic Assessment (BA) is required for the Environmental Authorisation of this project. Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required BA and public participation process for the project.
