South Deep Joint Venture proposes to expand the existing Khanyisa Solar PV facility by an additional 30MW. This expansion will increase the total generation capacity up to 80MW. To support the additional capacity, the project will utilise electrical grid infrastructure that will connect the expanded facility to the Twin Shaft Substation by looping into the existing 11 kV underground transmission line situated approximately 250m east of the operational solar plant. Amendment of EMPr
ABO Wind Lichtenburg 3 PV (Pty) Ltd propose to amend the approved Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs) for the operational Lichtenburg 1, 2 and 3 PV Solar Facilities (DFFE Refs: 14/12/16/3/3//1093, issued July 2019) to allow herbicide use as an alternative for effective vegetation control during construction and/or operational phases. This supports ongoing maintenance, fire risk management, and site safety while the facilities remain operational. Due to the use of the incorrect EA reference number in the previous public participation process, a second round of public participation is required. Notification of Appeal Decision
On 25 November 2024 the Chief Director granted amendments to the existing Environmental Authorisations (EAs) for the Malabar, Loperberg and Spreeukloof (now Loperberg) Wind Energy Facilities and associated infrastructure near Sterkstroom, Eastern Cape Province. These amendments included, among others, the splitting of certain authorisations, updates to project descriptions and layouts, and extensions to the validity periods of the authorisations. VulPro subsequently lodged an appeal against these decisions. The appeal process has now been finalised.

National Transmission Company South Africa (SOC) Ltd proposes to expand the footprint of the existing Mercury Main Transmission Substation (MTS) by approximately 5ha. This expansion will accommodate the installation of the first 2000 MVA 765 kV/400 kV transformer (project known as 'Mercury 2000 MVA 765/400 kV Transformer 1'), extension of the 765 kV busbar, equipping of 1x 400 kV and 1x 765 kV transformer bays, installation of 132 kV Fault Current Limiting Reactors (FCLRs), and construction of a laydown area. This expansion will increase transmission capacity, strengthen the reliability of the electricity network, facilitate the integration of renewable energy in Mpumalanga, and improve power transfer capacity in the Cape corridor.
